Alexandra Eala upset the world number 14 Clara Tauson in their matchup in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Eala, a 20-year-old, had never won a Grandslam singles match before, losing 3 sets at the French Open and Wimbledon. Earlier this year, she fought hard in the Miami Open, beating three Grandslam champions, Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and beating five-time Grand Slam champion and world No. 2 “Iga Świątek” but fell short in the semi-final match against Jessica Pegula.

Eala won the US Open juniors title in 2022, becoming the first Filipino to win a junior Grand Slam singles title. Now Eala put the Philippines in Tennis history defeating Clara Tauson 6-3 2-6 7-6 (13-11) in their match-up becoming the firt Filipino native to win in US Open Tennis Championships.
Eala will face the winner of Spanish world number 95 Cristina Bucsa of Spain or American Claire Liu in the next round.
